Girton Senior Girls Soccer Team crowned state champions

16 September 2024

On Tuesday 10 September, Girton’s Senior Girls Soccer Team competed at the SSV State Soccer Championships, emerging victorious after facing off against the top school teams in Victoria.

In their first match against Northcote High School, the team adapted well to the windy conditions and, despite a cautious start, demonstrated strength and resilience as they secured a 3–1 win.

The second match against Elisabeth Murdoch College saw Girton display outstanding passing, link-up play and composure, leading to a convincing 3-0 victory. Rowan Edwards (10 Jenkin) led the team’s offensive charge, scoring an impressive hat-trick.

The crucial third game against Ballarat High School tested the team’s mental fortitude. Thanks to a solid defence and invaluable strategic insights from Coach Furphy, Girton overcame the challenging conditions, winning 2–0 and earning their place in the state finals against Balwyn High School.

Following a brief two-hour break, the final kicked off on a positive note, with Girton leading 1–0 at halftime. However, Balwyn equalised in the second half, pushing the contest into extra time. Filled with motivation from Coach Furphy’s rousing halftime speech, Girton took to the pitch with determination, ultimately claiming the state championship with a 4–1 victory.

The girls’ teamwork was a hallmark throughout the tournament, conceding just two goals throughout the competition thanks to strong performances across defence, attack and midfield.
